INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION

James Scott:

For me soil and composting helped a lot with giving nutrients to the plant. It is quite fascinating that the composting is really hot inside and it almost feels like a homemade sauna.

I find it really cool how water helps so much with the plant. It helps deliver all of the nutrients around the root system and it almost works like a canal system which helps a lot with the plant. I find it funny that when I was younger I always thought the more water the better. But it's funny to see now if you use more water for a plant it will drown.

For me the pants and planting was really cool because it allowed us to use all of our knowledge and put it into action which helps a lot so it will allow us to do a lot better in our window gardens and there were a lot of clever ideas in the project.

I think it is amazing how all of the things in our ecosystem works together. It is kind of a confusing topic and I think everything must be in sink but if everything doesn't work together and one thing tat doesn't work leaves it all crumbles.

For me I found it amazing when I learned some facts about Pollination and Harvesting. I didn't realize how if all of the bee's would die we would have four years to live. For me this is a really scary number and I didn't realize how big of a part the bee's play in our ecosystem. I found it quiet interesting that when the bee's are made the queen bee gives them a specific role and whether they like it or not they will do there job. I found it quiet interesting that the queen bee gets this special jelly called royal jelly which is the jelly that makes bee's queen bee's. I found this topic really interesting.

People have a big part to play when it comes to interacting with plants so people can help them a lot but a lot of the time people can destroy the plants. If people respect the plants we can help them grow a lot better but if we don't respect them we are basically killing them. We can help make plants a lot healthier so we must just work hard which I found really fascinating.

Kieran Brand:

Soil and composting is very important in planting and growing crops. the compost help with the grow by having lots of nutrients. compost is made by the degradation of organic matter eg food and drinks. The difference between soil and compost is 100% organic matter where as soil is not and will have inorganic matter eg stones. What I like about this was the surprising heat of the compost as it can get up to 200 degrees.

Water helps plants to transport nutrients and minerals to and through. Water helps plants to be stable and stand up if you don't the plant will droop and this is the sign of not enough water. Plants absorb water through their entire surface area. The more the soil absorbs the water the more the plants has access intern the more the plant can grow. I like the talk our matric gave because it made me realise how important water is to society.

Plant and Planting is more than just putting a plant in some dirt there are some things you can and can't do like you must water once a day but not to much or you will kill the plant. The plant needs enough nutrients or it can't grow properly. Plant a plant in the proper place is very important because if you do it in a place with no light or in sand the plant won't grow. I like getting to actually do the planting and I like hands on tasks.

Permaculture is working with natural forces(wind, sun, water) and everything in your garden except the plants and seeds. All of permaculture is required to grow plant well and successfully. if your permaculture is good like nutritions soil, clean water and sunlight your plants will grow tall and successfully.

Pollination and Harvesting is one of the most important thing in all of life. If bees and pollination would suddenly disappear we would run out of food in 4 years, only 4 years. Harvesting at the right time is key to having health plants if you pick a tomatoes to early it won't be as tasty as it picked at the right time. The thing that I enjoyed about this was the interesting talk that we had with the matric he explain why are bees were under threat and the consequences if they were to leave.

The human impact to all of the above is all negative. Humans are the single most destructive animals in the would. for every tree we cut do less oxygen is produced for every bee hive we kill the less pollen is going to are flowers. The more we destroy the more we spiral into a hole of destruction that we can't escape.

Matt Cardo:

Soil and Composting - I learnt that soil is full of nutrients that help grow plants.  It provides plants with essential nutrients and minerals.  I also learnt that soil protects plants from erosion and other destructive physical activity.  It was also fascinating to feel what the inside of the pile of soil felt like and it was interesting as it was very hot which was unexpected.

Water - I learnt that water transports nutrients through a plant.  Water is also important because with little water plants would droop and would not be able to stand and water therefore helps the plant to stand and supports it.

Plants and Planting - This put our knowledge to the the test and I learnt so much key information that will help benefit me and my group we we plant in our window gardens.

Permaculture - I found the topic of Permaculture difficult to understand but I agree with the principle behind the idea and I feel that we will all benefit by following these principles.

Pollination and Harvesting - I was so interesting to learn that bees are one of the most important factors when it comes to planting.  I loved learning about the different roles that bees play in our ecosystems and i found this section of our field trip very fascinating.  The fact that I found most interesting is that if all of our bees died we would only have four years to live which signifies there importance.

Human Impact - Humans need to stop damaging our ecosystems and our precious environment.  We need to learn to work together to make a healthier environment and living ecosystems so that future generations can enjoy being in them.

Dylan Todd:

Soil and composting: Before the field trip I thought that soil was just dirt and didn't know much about it. I learned that it plays a very crucial role in the plants growth. Soil hold important minerals and stores water. It is also the home to many different small bugs and organism. Soil is made up of Air, water, organic matter and mineral particles. Soil protects the plant  and holds, releases and purifies water. I also found it very interesting how hot the  compost under death was. Putting my hand in there felt like a warm bath.

Water: I learned that water is very important when growing plants. It transfers nutrients by taking the nutrients from the soil and taking it to the plant. Water helps the plant stand up and with out enough water It will slouch. Water also plays a part in photosynthesis which is how the plant feeds itself. Water also allows the plant to cool. Too much water isn't a good thing as it can drown the plant, but to little water is also bad.

Plants and planting: I really enjoyed the planting as we interacted and started to work as team. We had each person get a separate job from collecting water to fetching compost. We put all our previous information that we learned in the other stations in place. We used our bottles with holes in them in the ground and filled them up with another bottle. This I found very cool as something so simple can be so effective and is a good use of unused 2l bottles. We used our information about compost and mulch and used both. Compost is useful as it adds more organic matter. Mulch is used to prevent evaporation. How garden look really good after everything was planted and we then put cardboard on top for less evaporation.

Permaculture: permaculture is used to create a living environment. It uses water, the sun and wind to create shelter, water and more for it to create a living environment. I also found it very interesting that some plants grow well next to each other called companion planting. I also found it interesting that worms can help a plants growth as it excretes nutritious waste.

Pollination and harvesting: I found pollination and harvesting the most interesting. I learned that there are 3 different types of bees. Male(drone) Female(worker bee) and Queen bee. Each bee has a certain role. The drone bees bread with the Queen bee and worker bees look after the hive. The queen bee is the most important bee if the queen bee dies the hive dies. All bees serve to protect the queen bee. A queen bee is born when royal jelly effects a egg making it the queen bee. It flies off and drone bees follows it and starts a new hive. I also found it very interesting that we would only have 4 years before mankind would extinct if there were no bees and we need to protect them>

Human impact: I learned that if we continue to build over our land it will kill ecosystems. I learned that there used to be hippos in the Liesbig river, but because of our human impact they are no longer there.
